Canary Islands, a safe destination
Since the beginning of the pandemic, the Government of the Canary Islands has been implementing measures to prevent risk situations, intensify the monitoring and surveillance of the epidemic, and strengthen public health and assistance services.
To guarantee everyone’s health, preserve the low incidence of COVID-19 in the archipelago and maintain tourist and economic activity with the maximum safety and quality conditions, Decree Law 17/2020, of October 29, has been promulgated. , which requires presenting a COVID-19 test to stay in tourist establishments in the Canary Islands.
Since when is it mandatory?
From November 14, 2020, to stay in tourist accommodation, it is essential that people over six years of age (who do not come from the Canary Islands) demonstrate, through a certificate, the completion, within a maximum period of 72 hours prior to your arrival, of a COVID-19 test with a negative result.
What type of test is valid?
A diagnostic test of active infection that proves that the tourist is not positive as a transmitter of COVID-19. The test must be approved by the health authorities of your country or the European Union. Both the rt-PCR and antigen tests are valid. Alternatively, the tourist can prove that the disease has passed by providing a serological certificate confirming that he / she has developed IgG antibodies.
How should the certificate be?
The test certificate can be presented in digital or paper format, and must contain the following information: date and time of completion, identity data of the person, laboratory responsible for its verification and its nature, and the negative result.
Who is exempted from taking the test?
This proof will not be required of people residing in the Canary Islands who prove their condition as such and declare that they have not left the archipelago in the 15 days prior to their arrival at the establishment and have not had, in that period, symptoms compatible with COVID -19.
Nor will the diagnostic test be required of non-residents who prove (with their travel document) having stayed in the Canary Islands the 15 days prior to the date of access to tourist accommodation and who, in addition, declare under their responsibility that in said period have had no symptoms consistent with COVID-19.
When and how should clients be informed?
Prior to the formalization of the reservation or contracting of tourist accommodation services, it will be reported that the conditions of access to it include that of accrediting the performance of the referred diagnostic test.
At the time of formalizing the reservation or contracting the tourist accommodation services, each client must accept the access conditions that apply to them.
All tourist accommodation must hang up at its reception, in at least five community languages, informative posters about these access conditions.
What if they don’t bring the test?
The tourist establishment will deny access to people who lack the diagnostic test and will inform them of the nearby laboratories and authorized centers where they can take the test.
Exceptionally, if the tourist cannot accredit the completion of the test, but shows his / her availability to take it, he / she will be able to access and spend the night the time necessary to obtain the results, although they will not be able to leave their room (except to take the test and collect the results).
What if they test positive?
The possible transfer of positive cases will be assessed by the health authorities based on their symptoms. As a general rule, asymptomatic cases will remain in isolation in the same establishment, in units enabled for this purpose.
The Government of the Canary Islands has a travel assistance policy to cover, in the absence of a private policy, possible cases of COVID-19 positive tourists who stay in regulated tourist establishments and whose vacations in the Canary Islands do not exceed 30 days duration. This policy covers the expenses for extension of stay for a maximum of 15 days, both for the COVID-19 positive person and their direct family members. In order to activate the coverage, the health services must report the patient to the insurer and inform them of how to proceed.
If they change their accommodation or island, do they have to repeat the test?
They do not have to repeat the test, but they do have to present the certificate at the new establishment, together with their travel documentation proving that the test was done within 72 hours prior to their arrival in the Canary Islands.
Tourist accommodation must keep at the disposal of the Canary Islands Health Service, until 15 days after departure, the documentation proving compliance by clients and clients with these security measures.
The establishment will inform its clients of the need to download the RADAR COVID contagion alert mobile application and keep it active, during their stay on the islands and within 15 days thereafter.
